Microsoft didn’t have much luck in the mobile world as the Windows Phone platform went down and the assistant Cortana struggled to compete with Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa. In fact, the Cortana app no longer works on Android or iOS.
Microsoft has announced that the Cortana mobile app will no longer be supported as of March 31, 2021, but that content created on it, such as lists and reminders, will still be accessible via Cortana for Windows or the Microsoft To Fai app.
The discontinuation of Cortana on smartphones comes as no surprise, also because it happened some time ago in some regions. It’s arguably the weakest of the big digital assistants (if you can even think of it as a big name) and is largely redundant on devices with built-in alternatives.
No further wizards are required
Even Amazon’s Alexa, which has had a lot of success on smart home devices, is not much talked about in connection with smartphones despite an Alexa app available. This is probably also due to the fact that almost all phones already have the Google Assistant or Siri and the users do not need an alternative.
Cortana will be alive for now, just not on your phone. It’s still available for Windows 10, and since it’s the default wizard there, we wouldn’t be surprised if it stays active for a while whether a lot of people are using it or not.For its part, Microsoft says this move is part of Cortana’s ongoing “evolution as a productivity assistant,” suggesting that he is still some form of commitment to service, just one that is more convenient on desktops and in business.
